WHERE WOLF

by John Yeo

He was a drifter who always moved with the whims of his ever-changing quest. A searcher for peace and serenity that drove him always ever-onward to new horizons.
No one ever really knew him, it was very difficult to penetrate the hard shell that obscured and shielded his ever hungry-mind.
He had a four-legged companion, a tame wolf, who travelled with him and rarely left his side. Rumour had it, he had stumbled across an injured wolf cub in the forest and nursed it back to health. The wolf just followed him wherever he went after that, and a deep relationship developed between the man and beast.
On the rare occasions his friend went missing, there would be several wolves howling in the night and his friend would be gone, sometimes for a few days.

Perhaps it was the need for human contact that led him to make his home near our forest encampment. We were a small community of self-sufficient small-time farmer and growers. The community accepted and welcomed him with open arms and friendship, as he drifted around doing small jobs and hard laborious work for food and drink. He was very fond of the homemade rough strong cider, that was brewed by one of our fruit growers.

One sad memorable week we discovered several dead sheep and a goat, killed by a predator and left half-eaten in the fields. Suspicion fell on the tame wolf and several of our menfolk approached the man and his wolf with guns.

There was unease as he stood facing these angry farmers without fear, the wolf just stood beside him.

“We’ve come for the killer wolf, step aside or die!” Shouted the leader.

“Why? The wolf is not a killer and he stays with me.” Replied the drifter.

Then the wolf growled and howled, and looked at his friend, there was a moment of shocked silence as the drifter whispered, “Where Wolf?”
Moving on the fringes of the forest in the distance, cautiously stalking a wild bird was a full grown wild cat. There was a volley of shots from the men as the big cat fled into the forest and disappeared into the trees.

The next day the drifter and his friend were gone never to be seen in that part of the forest again.

THE REUNION

by John Yeo

The Old Curiosity Shop was packed full of ancient memorabilia. Old Jake who ran the shop was always very friendly and willing to chat to passers-by.
He was a very great friend of ours, he would rush out of the shop whenever we passed. This was a Monday morning and he excitedly ran out of his shop to show us his mystery car.
“Hey you two! Look!”
We were astonished, parked next to Jakes cycle was the most amazing Minicar.
” I have a funny feeling, I know where this came from, It is my 70th. birthday today, and I have not heard from my wayward, wild-child for years. There was a ribbon placed on the radiator grill.”
At that moment three Harley Davidson motorcycles roared by and as they passed there was a gleeful shout of, “Happy Birthday!” from the leading motor cyclist.
Then we jumped back quickly, as some fireworks exploded in a colourful display across the road from the shop.
The birthday party lasted all day, when Jakes mischievous son returned.

DARKSPEED

by John Yeo

“The infinitely powerful speed of dark, is a new super speed, that exceeds the speed of light, by many aeons-per-supersecond. The elusive dark matter that surrounds us all is moving so fast, that our eyes are unable to focus on the entity at all.” Prof. Barnes, the chief scientist was addressing the team of brave cybernauts who were risking everything, to travel through space using the new medium of darkspeed.

Captain Johnson was intrigued by the vehicle he was required to take charge of, and how much extra training the crew would require before they took control.
“How do I power up a ship that is running on an invisible medium?” He enquired.

“The fuel powering is automatic, once the robotic fuel systems key into the dark matter, the propulsion is automatically fired up, and entirely controllable by pulling a plug and switching off the motors.” replied the Professor, “Landing the ship on the reserve conventional motors, is much like operating a normal spaceship.” The Professor replied.

“How do we key into the dark matter to take off again, when we are ready to come home?” asked Jim Green, the chief engineer.

“Ah! Thats easy.” continued the Professor, with a grin “You just insert the plug again, once the system is connected up, the power re-continues to flow.”
After many weeks of intensive training for the crew, with the boffins finalising the details of the revolutionary new craft. The lift-off countdown began, 10-9-8-7-6——-1-Zero.

One hour later the spaceship landed in a remote desert in the middle of Africa. The watching world was stunned and the spaceship was soon surrounded by cautious troops.
Suddenly the trapdoor was released, and six very youthful looking cybernauts came down the steps.
At the debriefing, which lasted for days, it became obvious that the crew were under the impression they had been away from home for years, and their intelligence levels had spiralled beyond belief. Their youthful appearance was astonishing, and the adventures they related were enough to fill many books.
Six months down the line the spaceship vanished from the high security quarantine area where the authorities had been examining it for viral invaders. The original crew were missing and the search was on for the almost instantaneous return of the missing spaceship.
The new era of darkspeed, darkmatter travel, was underway……..

CRAPS

by John Yeo

Tommy and Billy passed an alley in town, a group of young men were standing in a circle shooting dice. The excitement was contagious and the two teenagers were drawn to watch. The two boys were intrigued and curious to be involved.
“Hey! Have a try and score, this is an easy way to make lots of money.” said one of the players.

“I haven’t got any money, only our Mummy’s shopping money, We are both running errands.” said Billy

“Don’t worry! Use that. You are sure to double your money. I’ve only been playing a few weeks and I’ve been winning regularly. I’m Wolfie, I’ll look after you.”

Tommy said to Billy, “No way brother, we could get into mischief here, you have Mums shopping to get and I have something belonging to our old Dad in my pocket that could help get us into trouble.”

Billy knew what that meant, winked, then turned to Wolfie and said, “Wolfie, that’s an unusual name, could you show us how to play? We haven’t got much time or much money, but we would like to try.”

“Well done,” said Wolfie, “Meet Foxy, we will show you the ropes.”
Wolfie and Foxy threw the dice a few times, to show the brothers how to play and a game was soon underway. Soon the boys were steadily losing and it came to Tommy’s turn to roll the dice.
Tommy suddenly slipped on the hard pavement and fell, everyone rushed to help him get up. No one noticed the sleight of hand as he swapped the dice for Daddies legacy.
A few minutes later the boys luck had turned and they had doubled their money.
“Raise the stakes! I am on a roll, the dice are breathing and alive.” Tommy got very excited.

Wolfie and Foxy looked increasingly upset at this change of fortune. Sirens suddenly could be heard nearby and everyone ran away fast. Street gambling is illegal everywhere, and as the two villains were running away, Wolfie slipped on some dogs crap and a pigeon crapped on Foxy.

Tommy had the dice in his hand as the two brothers entered the local grocery store laughing.
“Dad was smiling on us today, from on high.” said Billy, “Craps was definitely his favourite pastime.”

BOILING POINT

This is a poem I have written in response to a prompt on Writers Digest

http://www.writersdigest.com/whats-new/2015-november-pad-chapbook-challenge-day-7

For today’s prompt, write a simmer down poem. This could be a poem about cooking, about calming down, about taking it easy. You get to simmer down in your own way.

BOILING POINT

by John Yeo

The aggression was incredibly infectious

As the demonstrators made their point.

With banners unfurled, chanting together,

Everyone united as followers of the cause.

A car was upended and exploded in flames,

Then a house brick shattered a window.

Shouting slogans, the demonstrators formed

A wall of aggressive unwarranted outrage.

The authorities called in the police and the army

Anything to establish control.

Forming unbroken ranks, with protective shields

They herded and faced the protestors down.

Amid the chaos of looting, fighting and arson,

The struggle erupted and spread.

A volcano of protest exploded and peaked.

To the boiling point of emotional stress.

The authorities began to take some control

The face-down began to turn things around.

The leaders of the rebels were under arrest

Leaving the last protestors to simmer down.

The chaotic outrage brought under control,

After much violence in the city streets

The last of the ambulances left the scene.

The protest had finally run out of steam.

THE LAST WISH

by John Yeo

“Well Roger your three wishes have almost completely expired. Two of them have already been used . You are extremely wealthy and ageless, you will live as long as the world turns around the sun. I understand you have a very special request for your third and final desire. What would you like?”
“Yes Master, I have given much thought to my final request, and I ask for a companion to share eternity with, I get very lonely on my own and I would love a special friend to spend my life with.”
“That is possible Roger, do you have anyone in mind?”
“I want to be with that Angel on the pedestal in the park, I would like a pair of wings just like hers. We could be happily together for eternity.”
“Are you absolutely sure this is what you wish for, to be with your Angel Roger? I can make this final wish come true for you.”
“Yes please Master,”
Then with a wave of the magic wand Roger was turned to stone.

Ichthyosis Vulgaris

by John Yeo

The day that Billy changed his appearance, he began to look like a fish, scaly skin broke out all over his face. The teacher said to him,
“Billy you are in the wrong country! No maybe you are in the wrong pond. Ha Ha!”
Billy blushed, and ran out of the classroom, his teacher apologised for the thoughtless remark and sent him to see the school nurse.
The trouble was no one at the school had ever seen anything like this before. Even the nurse was unsure of what to do for the best, and sent him home.
“You had better see your doctor Billy, I am sure he will know what to do!”
The doctor made an appointment for Billy to see a specialist in six weeks time.
Meanwhile, Billy was bullied and taunted every day, children can be cruel to someone who looks a little different from normal. Fatty Palmer, was the worst,
“Hey Fishface, you have had your chips! Get back into the frying pan!”
Billy cringed with embarrassment and backed away from the crowd, spending more and more time alone.
Stella became friends with him and gave him a lot of support. Stella’s father was a gymnastics teacher and she had learned a lot from him.
Fatty Palmer and his friends gleefully made fun out of the two of them,
“Here comes fish head and the trout, look out gang the freaks are about!”
Stella and Billy walked away together.
“Ignore them Billy,” said Stella, “We will only get into worse trouble.”

Billy went to the hospital and was examined in the skin clinic by a specialist who said.
“I am sorry to say you have a common inherited skin disorder called Ichthyosis Vulgaris, sadly there is no cure, but I can prescribe soothing creams and lotions. The symptoms should disappear in a short time and they may never return, but there is a chance they will come back in later years.”
“Ichthyosis what?”asked Billy’s Mum, “Your Dad had a similar thing on his chest Billy, very mild though.”
“That would be right,” said the consultant.

Some days later, Billy and Stella were walking home. Fatty Palmer and three boys were lying in wait for them, jumping out on the pavement they began jeering and threatening Billy. Stella took one look and went into action with a whirlwind of kicks and punches she brought Fatty down, and broke his arm. The other boys were on the receiving end of some very harsh punishment, before running away smartly.
Billy was astonished, Sella grinned and said. “My Dad is a black belt in Karate and he taught me a lot, I am also a black belt and I will show you how to look after yourself.

Billy and Stella stayed friends, became engaged, and got married. Of course that was ten very happy years ago now.

Ichthyosis_Vulgaris

Ichthyosis vulgaris is a skin condition that causes dry, dead skin cells to accumulate in patches on the surface of your skin. It’s also known as “fish scale disease” because the dead skin accumulates in a similar pattern to a fish’s scales. “IMAGE AND INFO FROM THE NET.”

Finish the story begins with:

“She lived a life that some would describe as being on edge.”
This precipice was such a rewarding place to balance Marg’s life. The sharp edge of some uncomfortable moments was cushioned by the rewards. The adrenaline of the excitement blended so well with the well hidden, well invested funds she had accumulated.
Sam had contacted Marg and they were to meet up with Delphine in London. Sam had produced two counterfeit U.S. five cent coins, that were allegedly minted at a factory in South Kensington. Dr Dickus and his henchmen planned to produce vast amounts of currency to flood the money markets and create worldwide instability. The coins were an exquisite clue to the larger denominations that were in production.
The information extracted from the prisoner in Alaska, led the team to a rundown, neglected industrial site. The plan was to swiftly destroy the counterfeiters, heavily guarded factory and hit Dickus where it would hurt him most. Marg and Sam with ……

A DIGNIFIED EXIT

by John Yeo

She sat on the throne of swords, denoting the powerful influences of the razor sharp effects of her power. The power of life and death that she was able to wield with a nod of her regal head, flowing with the long blonde hair of a Warrior Queen.
The ceremonial robes she was attired in, were made from red and grey woven silk. Her enemies said she always wore red, when she sat on the throne, to denote the blood-soaked terror of the untold thousands of deaths in her wars of terror, in pursuit of alluring power.
A fearsome sight to behold as she was leading her generals, riding on a black thoroughbred stallion, into battle, with her long blonde hair streaming behind her!
One mysterious day, she cut off her long blond hair, then wrapped the tresses in the blood-red robes, after placing the package on the throne of swords, she rode off into the night.
Her disappearance took the world by surprise. After a cryptic announcement, delivered on the last day, she ever sat on the throne of swords.

“Power once attained is too dangerous to retain.”

THE FACE OF HIDDEN FEELING

by John Yeo

I am the one who knows the real me, deep inside I am angry and unhappy.
My eyes are blind, but my soul can see, the futility and prejudice in this unhappy world. My hands have been painted with wide open eyes to give the illusion of sight. When I remove my hands to touch and feel, my eyes will always be unable to see, the pain and sorrow in this unhappy world.
The eyes in my soul will never shed tears, in sympathy or sadness. I have had the artist describe my looks, to reflect a face I will never see, in any mirror that will work for me.

And yet….

I am the one who knows the real me, deep inside I am happy and carefree.
My eyes are blind but my soul can see, the hope for the future of this wonderful world. My hands have been painted to create a disguise and present an illusion of sight. When my hands are removed the painted eyes will never reflect a smile, to mirror the happiness and hope I feel, in this magical mysterious world. The eyes in my soul will forever light up with the joy and happiness I feel. I have had the artist describe my looks, to reflect a face I will never see, in any mirror that will work for me.

Which of my faces is hiding from you, behind my painted hands.

That, I will never, ever, allow you to see!
