Nature in a confused un-natural state

by John Yeo

Two years ago during a very fierce storm, the strong winds blew a beautiful flowering Nectarine tree over. The roots were still firmly planted deep in the soil where they continued to nourish the tree. This year the tree burst into flower in Spring. The heavily scented flowers covered the branches over the prone tree as it lay on the ground still alive and thriving. The confused wild birds, attracted by the heavily scented perfume, flew down to feed from the confused tree, still alive and growing strongly, lying on the ground.

Velvet Verbosity~~100 Word Challenge ~~~ “SECURE”

The doctors arrived to help, wearing personal protection equipment. Rubber boots, protective suit with a hood, apron, gloves, a face-mask and goggles.
Two figures looking like alien space invaders approached our hut. Mother was sick and very unsteady on her feet. Grandad said, he thought she had the flu, I heard one of the doctors mention the word, EBOLA. One of my school-friends said people were leaving our village fast, because of this horrible disease. The doctors treated Mum and left quickly. They had to go because it was very hot wearing the protective outfits that made them feel secure.

INSPECT
100 word challenge by John Yeo

The plane landed and came to an abrupt halt at the end of the runway. We grabbed our hand luggage from the overhead lockers and left, heading for the customs hall and security.
“Open the bag, please. Sir”,
“Of course, I replied”. I then froze, the bag was stuffed full of money.
“Will you come with me, Sir?”
“But”, I replied, “This is not my money”
“I must insist, Sir”. Two other customs officers appeared from nowhere.
They escorted me to a nearby office, I tried to explain,
I was arrested. Then my identical bag turned up.

DEEP BLACK

ETERNAL BLACK

By John Yeo

Mrs Taylor was a widow who always dressed in black. For thirty years she had worn black clothes, a black armband and a black scarf covering her head. I once asked why? This was her reply :

“My husband Jack was a sailor, who perished in the cruel sea. We threw black wreaths in the sea when he died. In the depths of the ocean there is no night or day. The sun never penetrates and there is eternal black. I wear black to remember Jack, When I die I will be with him. We will be together in eternal black.”

Velvet Verbosity ~ 100 word challenge

GRUFF

All my friends liked Miss Lawson, the music teacher, she formed the school choir. I had a very melodic boyish treble voice, and I was chosen to sing several solo pieces of music, much to my delight. We had a very important performance, as I started to sing my solo, my voice suddenly became very hoarse and gruff. This ended my singing career in the choir, as my voice began to break and I developed a very deep double bass voice that bordered on sandpaper grinding on metal. Then Jazz made me a singer again with a voice like Satchmo.

THE YOUNGSTER

Always beaten by his brothers and sisters, Felix was the youngster of nine children. Mum and Dad were descendants of immigrants to this wonderful land of opportunity. Felix was very quick witted at school and because he was of short stature he became known as Felix-the-runt, from the O’Shaughnessy family. Whenever Felix heard this word he became enraged and came out fighting like a bull. Felix developed into a very hard man and he became a professional boxer. The day he fought for the featherweight championship his trainer whispered in his ear, “Come on Runty”. Felix is the new champion.

THE TWIST IN THE TALE

100-Word-Challenge

Jim and his pals sat around the camp fire telling stories until late into the night. Jim started talking about the ghostly fable of a mad wizard who haunted these woods murdering then leaving the dead behind for fun after casting spells over his bloody work. Jim muttered some incomprehensible words, there was a crash of thunder, lightning flashed, then darkness. Four blood-soaked bodies were discovered in the cold light of the following day. One solitary survivor was left to add a twist, and tell his gruesome tale over and over again. Feasting on his magical blood-soaked words of despair.

Unlikely Pairing~ Curry and Chips~

CURRY AND CHIPS,

By John Yeo

Hot spicy curry and chipped potatoes. The traditional accompaniment to hot spicy curry would be rice, I have never particularly liked rice as I find the taste bland. One day I was torn between a takeaway curry and rice, or traditional fish and chips. I decided to try a little of each and to everyones astonishment, I ordered curry and chips. From that day forward, a new dish to tickle my taste buds was put together. Multi-ethnic-heaven! Whenever I get the opportunity to marry these two cultural delights together I take the opportunity and indulge. Heaven served on a plate.

The Birthday Party

Time for another Odd Trio prompt: write a post about any topic you want, in whatever form or genre, but make sure it features a slice of cake, a pair of flip-flops, and someone old and wise.

THE BIRTHDAY PARTY

by John Yeo

Granny Annie was 89 years old, full of the practical wisdom, that reflected a life spent taking care of a household during some very austere times of war and rationing. Husband Wilfred was a baker who owned and ran his business while Annie went to do her job as a dental nurse, these days she would have had the respectable title of a dental technician.  The wisdom of a life well lived and well experienced by the fluctuations of a topsy-turvy economic climate were very useful in the lives of her ever-growing family.

Then came the day of Granny Annie’s 90th birthday, the family gathered with gifts and many smiles were evident, as presents were unwrapped, and the excited expression on Granny Annie’s face mirrored the smiles and laughter of the younger members of the family. Granny Annie unwrapped a huge parcel that was wrapped and wrapped many times, with lots of colourful birthday gift wrapping paper. So much paper that it took several minutes to reach a very interesting cardboard box in the middle, this was the size of a shoe box and had masses of sticky tape on the edges. This was impossible for her to get into with her elderly hands, and she signalled young William to come and open his present to her. The lid was removed and to everyones delight a pair of flip-flops were revealed, not just any old flip flops, a very comfortable looking pair of flip flops, designed to cushion a pair of 90 year old feet very comfortably. Granny Annie gave William a smile of thanks while wagging her finger at him for the cheeky packaging.

A huge pink iced-cake was wheeled into the lounge with a large candle in the middle. Excitedly everyone urged Granny Annie to blow the candle out and make a wish, she managed this with the able help of William. Then came the cutting of this work of art and Granny Annie was served a modest slice to taste. Delicately she nibbled the cake in her very wise, well brought up, delicate, traditional way. Then to the amazement and horror of all concerned, Granny Annie coughed and spluttered, and breathed her last.

Zig zag

ZIG ZAG

by John Yeo

IMG_3281

The seagulls flying high above the landscape were free to ride the thermal currents. The powerful eyes of the hunters were ever on the lookout for food, in the waters or on the land below. Food is their universal reason to scour the skies and seas to survive. Marking out the hunting territory, they would zig-zag across the sky-scape, ever vigilant for morsels to consume, or take to their families in the home nests. Guarding their piece of sky to protect the food supply from hungry gull intruders. Zig-zagging backwards and forwards, creating patterns in the sky.  The gull heaven.
