FLYING JEWELS

by John Yeo

Two climbers were making their way along rugged, rocky slopes. The hills and valleys spread before them from little used trails, leading upwards, always upwards.
They turned into a large natural plateau covered by green succulent plants, containing a hidden valley, with a stream of pure clear water running through the rocky terrain.

“We will, pitch camp here for the night and rest up.” said Lloyd.

“Great!” Replied his best friend, Hamilton nodding in agreement.

They had been climbing for about three hours now and he was ready for a rest.
Chasing the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, the two friends were on holiday together searching for the rare flying jewels of Nepal.
After a few beers around the campfire and a meal from various tins they were soon asleep.
The next morning they knew they had reached their goal
Everywhere, as far as the eye could see the incredible Cactus plants had burst into a fantastic sea of succulent beauty, heavily scented floral splendour. They were covered in beautiful butterflies sipping nectar from these glorious blooms. The flying jewels had arrived.

PICTURE IT AND WRITE ~ A HARSH REALITY

by John Yeo

The very wealthy man had a vision, he approached the local authorities with a large sum of money, to be used for the good of the local people who still lived in the town where he grew up as a lad.

The plan was for a green space, with flowerbeds, pretty shrubs, and trees where wild birds were able to perch and nest. Many benches were to be strategically set up, to allow elderly folk or mothers to rest while their children were at play. Waterfowl were to be encouraged to swim on the stream, flowing through this oasis of rest and tranquility and a yearly annuity would be set aside for the upkeep and maintenance of his dream.

His plan was welcomed with open arms by the grateful folk, who served on the town council, and an agreement was quickly reached. The Mayor named the park after this very generous benefactor, and a statue of him was erected in a small enclosed garden in the centre of this beautiful green, open space, in memorium of his generosity.

Ten years later there was an extraordinarily brutal killing in the town, and the news media were congregating at an overgrown, neglected, little-used open space set in the middle of an urban conurbation. A young lady was standing alone with tears streaming down her cheeks, amid the littered open area, in the centre of this rundown little park. Empty beer cans and plastic bags were everywhere under the rusted broken seats and carelessly tossed into a stream that was flowing through. A moss-covered, chipped and broken, unrecognisable statue had been overturned and upended into the water.

“Why are you crying Miss?” Asked a hard-bitten seen-it-all news reporter.

“I cry for the love of my Grandfather who had a dream that is now shattered and smashed by unthinking unashamed vandals. I cry for the visible drop in the standards of living, that allows the memory of a very caring man to be ground into the dirt and detritus of drink-sodden ne’er-do wells. Above all I cry for justice to be meted out to the killers of my beloved sister who was abused and murdered here in the very place where his dream came to fruition. God may have mercy on their vicious souls! “

MYSTERY CRUISE

by John Yeo

The magical mystery cruise aboard “Deutshland” was due to to set sail.
The passengers were all aboard. The only person who was totally aware of the destination was Captain Klaus.
Lord and Lady Rochester were travelling with their own personal butler. Many other members of the blue-blooded aristocracy from all over Europe were taking this mystery voyage. The Count and the Countess of Bravaria were also on board.
The celebrated, Frau Marples of fictional fame came aboard alone. The order to cast off was given by the Captain and the mystery cruise got underway. Two days later a body was discovered hidden in a lifeboat and Frau Marples was quickly summoned by Captain Klaus to help. Meanwhile his lordship identified the body as his butler. Several hours later, Frau Marples identified the murderer as Lord Rochester, who was arrested and placed under armed guard. Her ladyship was heartbroken at the death of the butler, as Frau Marples had predicted, when she proclaimed. “This time the butler was unable to do it!”

TERRORISM

by John Yeo

Breathlessly and excitedly I arrived home clutching the white envelope as tightly as possible.

“Margaret! I got the tickets. I had to wait in a mile long queue for about an hour! We are going to see them live on stage. A first night performance of the musical evening, featuring the talents of our favourite, Andre Rieu.”

“Oh! Fantastic! That is brilliant, Well done John! I have nothing to wear. We will have to go shopping this morning, I will need a very special outfit for this. Thank you so much darling.”

“I have ordered our car for 5pm, that will give us time for a cocktail before the performance begins.”

A few hours later, dressed in our finery we arrive at the concert hall and take our seats and indulge in the unique spectacle and colourful backdrop with the sound of a superb musical extravaganza.

Suddenly there is a huge explosion followed by a stunned silence, before the screams of the injured and the dying ring out. Then sirens and a hubbub of chaos.

SOCIAL SLIP-UP

by John Yeo

The party was a huge social event among the islands and inlets around the approach to the port.    The marine community arrived in many vessels, there was always ample mooring space at the big house. The servants had been busy for a whole week in preparation for this long awaited event. Sebastian, the son of a wealthy industrialist Ivan, and his beautiful wife Dolores, had reached the age of eighteen. The guest list was composed of the members of some of the wealthiest people in the community and security was very tight.
The magical night arrived, Sebastian at the door greeting the steady trickle of arrivals with a fixed smile became somewhat uneasy.
Something was not quite right, the security had expelled several young people, and there was a growing presence at the main gate as more and more people attempted to gate-crash the party. Soon fights began between the gatecrashers and security and the police arrived.
Suddenly it became clear, Sebastian had publicly invited his girlfriend Penelope through a post on his Facebook page.

MIRROR DISTORTED DEFLECTION

by John Yeo

My friends and family in fact everybody I come into contact with, all tell me how wonderful I am looking. My boyfriend is so very proud of me, he does everything in his power to encourage me to go out with him as he would like to introduce me to his friends and family.
I always make an excuse not to go anywhere. How can I be seen in public looking like this? Why do people tell lies all the time and compliment me on my looks? I know how ugly I am, I can see myself in the mirror.
When I try to tell my parents why I am not a sociable person, they laugh and tell me not to be shy, then they tell me how beautiful I am.
Can’t people see these horrible black marks all over my face and hands? They look like tattoos! I have never been near a tattoo shop in my life.
My friend Cynthia is always telling me not to be so silly, she says I am lovely and slim and beautiful. I know she is lying though, as she is always going on about how fat she looks in the mirror, yet she is slimmer than I am. My Mum says she is an anorexic and she can’t help it.
I have to pretend to be ill all the time so that I can stay indoors, my Dad thinks I am a hypochondriac. When I asked the doctor if I could have plastic surgery, he laughed and asked me what for? When I told him, he wasn’t laughing anymore, he thinks I need to see a specialist Psychological doctor.
My Dad got angry and said that’s a waste of time and money as there is nothing wrong with me.
I don’t look in the mirror anymore!

A RAINY DAY

by John Yeo

Torrential rain was keeping the family indoors and everyone was bored.
Billy the rebellious, restless teenager, a rebel without a cause was unsettled and fed up.
“I’m bored, this rain is a pain, there is nothing to do! Betty! I’m talking to you! Why are you ignoring me?”
Betty was a happy little nine year old, busy playing with Snuggles a Persian cat who was also fed up.
“Leave us alone Billy! I am bored too, I’ll call Mummy if you carry on.”
The rain continues, tempers are fraying. Snuggles is mewing, Mummy comes running.
Father arrives with a mysterious box.
“I have been clearing out the loft! Look what I’ve found! Hey everyone come here! Look!”
A long red and white box captures everyone’s interest as Father lifts the lid.
A large board with cards, paper money, tiny wooden houses and hotels with dice and little models.
“Monopoly!” Mummy exclaims! “I haven’t seen that for years.”
“Bags the model car!” Billy shouts.
The game is on.
“Hey the rain’s stopped!” shouts Betty.
Nobody moved.

FOLLOW YOUR DREAM

by John Yeo

Joe was a steam train buff, he loved the metal monsters that chugged across the great prairies through the stunning scenery in the days of the steam train revolution. Joe’s dream was to go to the famous Chattanooga hotel and visit the original site of the great train-ride that was the inspiration for the big band hit “Chattanooga Choo-Choo”, made famous by Glenn Miller and his big band.
Joe Sproggins was a man who had spent his life in a merchant bankers office in the city of London in the UK, where Joe dreamed his alter-ego dreams of riding on the footplate of this grand old steam engine.
Joe was married to Dora and their very precious first memory was the night they met, dancing in the local dance-hall to the sound of a big band, belting out “Chattanooga Choo-Choo”.
Fifty years later, after a very happy marriage, they excitedly arrived in Chattanooga in Tennessee to fulfil Joe’s lifetime dream.
Joe was in seventh heaven, soaking up his musical dream.

SOLED AND HEELED.

by John Yeo

Lord Fauntleroy trekking in the backwoods with his retinue of servants, settled down for the night to rest within the canvas walls of his luxury tent. The encampment was chosen with care by his butler and personal friend Cox. His Lordship took off his trekking boots and carefully laid them side-by-side outside the door flap of his palatial tent. “Cox will deal with those,” he muttered to himself, before he retired for the night.
Soon he was awoken by bright lights and a whirring sound outside the encampment. He opened the flap to his tent to behold a wondrous sight. A huge alien saucer-shaped craft was drifting noiselessly above. Suddenly with a squelch and a sucking noise all the equipment and the people in the encampment were lifted into the spacecraft using some form of transference technology. In the morning the only signs of the good Lord and his retinue were a solitary pair of boots laid side by side in the middle of a pathway. Search parties are combing the area to no avail.

THE MESSAGE

by John Yeo

Come and buy my pretty balloons, you will have fun, if you buy one of my beautiful balloons.” The lady selling the balloons, smiled right at Mary.
” How much for a balloon?” Mary’s mother asked.
“£5 pounds each.”
“Please Mummy,” begged little Mary, “I need the little girl halfway up.”

OK! Can I have the one she wants please.”
The balloon seller smiled.
“Fill your name and address in here and should your balloon escape and fly away high in the sky, there’s a phone number on here that the finder can ring and you could win lots of money if it lands very far away.”
When they got home Rags the family dog saw Mary’s new balloon and jumped upon her barking and wagging his tail. Mary bent to stroke him and let go of her new balloon that went flying high in the sky.
“Oh! Rags, you made me let go!”
Six months later a telephone call came to say that Mary’s balloon had reached Thailand, and she had won the prize of £500 pounds.
