THE DREAM

by John Yeo

Deafening thunderclaps, with forked lightning striking the tower, torrential rain. A rude awakening as the huge storm ripped her from the dream that haunted her every night she could remember of her very short life.
Always the same cold thick stone walls surrounding her, with a very thick heavy door that prevented her from leaving.
Taunted daily by her captor who was out to break her spirit and force her into a marriage that she wanted no part in. The windows were slits in the thick brickwork sited just above the bed where she slept.
One day a single horse galloped up to the castle walls.
Hail to you!” Came a call.
Excited, she was unable to clearly respond and pushed her pink scarf through a gap in the slits that served as windows.
There was no sound and her captor allowed the young knight into the castle.
Then she heard the sound of a dreadful sword fight with clashing of steel on steel.
The heavy door to her tower prison was suddenly thrown open……

THE STANDING STONES

by John Yeo

Petey and Sarah were very excited, the half term picnic was under way.
“There are some curious stones in a corner of the field,” the farmer said “They are very old and historical. There is a mysterious story attached to these stones, they are reputed to be haunted.”
Everyone then settled down in the field to enjoy a feast and examine the curious stones.
Father awoke a short time later after a sound sleep, to find the rest of the family fast asleep. He rubbed his eyes and woke everybody up, then recounted a very strange dream.
“There were many people in pure white animal skins carrying spears,”
“That’s right!” Sarah interrupted, “I saw them in my dream too, they
were chanting and dancing.”
“I saw them too!” Petey piped up, “they were dragging a little lamb by the ears.”
Mummy said “The next part was too horrible, I had the same dream, the poor little lamb was slaughtered.”
The shocked family then jumped into the car and rushed home. Strangely haunted by standing-stones.

THE HAIRDRESSER

by John Yeo

The treasure map was clearly marked with a cryptic clue. Dan reached the shore of a very strange Island, they began hacking their way to the interior of the jungle covered Island. Eleanor ran a comb through her hair and kept behind Dan as he cleared a path. Eleanor was studying the map closely
“We must head due South West Dan, until we reach what looks like a waterfall.”
“OK Eleanor! We should be there within the hour.”
Eleanor patted the loose curls on her head and kept to the path.
Suddenly there was a sound of water crashing to the ground from a great height. The sound got louder and louder as they approached a huge double waterfall.
They both gasped in amazement.
Eleanor shouted to Dan. “The treasure is in a cave behind the exact spot where the two falls merge.”
Eleanor combed her hair flat and donned a wetsuit.
Dan watched as she fearlessly dived into the raging waters and emerged with a haversack of Inca jewels.
Eleanor bought a hairdressing business.

WINNER TAKES ALL

by John Yeo

The peace and serenity of the stables was absolutely perfect for the harassed and very famous celebrity singer Feline Foxglove. Of course her privacy was always very important to her and she spent a huge portion of her very high earnings to make sure she was never disturbed. Feline had many secrets to hide, most were well buried in the distant past, except for her habitual use of a very dangerous illegal substance. Her very trustworthy P.A. Mary Stavans was responsible for obtaining her supplies, and she never failed to come up with the goods.

Feline’s stables were famous throughout the racing world for thoroughbred racehorses and she would excitedly back them all to win, every time they ran. Sam Soames her bookmaker was used to paying her out and usually made money elsewhere by laying off the bets.

Until Mary’s call……

“Boss, we have a problem, I need to see you urgently”

The blackmailer died by unknown hands as the starting pistol went off and the cry went up …..”They’re Off!”

Feline smiled winningly.

PARADISE

by John Yeo

We have been here now for ten long years.
The sun rises daily in a clear blue sky
We are privileged to be here,
We have all we need.

Fish from the depths of a warm blue sea
Fruits of the earth are plentiful and sweet.
Cut off from the hustle and bustle of life.
Time passes slowly.

We rely on the boat for news and supplies,
The weather is usually kind and clear
Tornadoes or cyclones are threatened
Sometimes very near.

Our way of life is envied by many.
We are lucky to be living in paradise.
The grass is always greener over there.
Before the boredom sets in.

I would sit and dream of a carefree life
When on the beach passing time.
A life full of labour saving machines.
Cashpoints, the city and super cars.

Theatre, cinema and fast moving lives,
Clubs and shops full of luxury goods.
Fashion and interesting super malls,
With people everywhere.

Education, opportunities, time to save
Rushing from home to the office,
Mixing with folk from around the world.
Enjoying life to the full.

Then I would turn and look into your eyes
Stretch and leisurely take your hand,
Smile sweetly and say
“Perhaps we will book a holiday in the city.

Some-day”

For this week’s challenge, a black and white photograph (owner and girls unknown) of three school friends at a rural schoolhouse.

ETERNAL FRIENDS

By John Yeo

The three friends were all Land Army girls during the second world war. Betty and Cissy worked on the land and Lil drove an ambulance. They all met up one day to visit their old school for the school reunion day.
Lil borrowed the ambulance and gave Betty and Cissy a lift. The snow was thick on the ground and Lil drove very slowly and cautiously to avoid skidding out of control. Laughingly she joked, they would be safe in her hands as she was a first class ambulance driver usually driving as fast as possible.
The three friends had a wonderful time catching up with their old school chums, bringing  all the old memories of happy schooldays to life again. I took a photograph of the three of them together, promising faithfully I would send a copy on to each of them. They drove off in the ambulance laughing cheerily and waving goodbye.
Sadly that was the last anyone saw of them.
The German aircraft seemed to come from nowhere, strafing and bombing the vehicle and the houses nearby. We heard later that the bomb that hit the ambulance was a direct hit and  killed the three friends instantly. The funeral was a very sad solemn occasion that will live long in my memory.
I had the photograph developed and it was used in the obituary in the local paper, I saved this copy as a sad remembrance of my three dear school friends.
Eternal friends lost through war.
