UNCOMFORTABLE CORONAVIRUS VIBES

by John Yeo

The huge publicity campaign highlighting the dangers of interaction with other people during the current Coronavirus pandemic makes one feel extremely uncomfortable all the time.

Whenever one ventures out of the house the dangers, whether real or imagined are all around. Most people we come into contact with, take the necessary precautions by keeping to the metre distancing recommendations and a high proportion wear a face covering when entering the local shops.

However there are still the virtually unconcerned minority, who take enormous risks with their own health and everyone else they come into contact with.

The daily statistics, sadly give a clear picture of the latest figures of people who have become infected with the virus and sadder still, the number of people who’ve been hospitalised. Then the most uncomfortable statistic of all, the daily death toll from this unremittingly vicious virus.

We live in a small town of narrow streets around the main shopping area that has been turned into a one way pedestrian area. One side of the main road has been designated by clear arrow signs pointing in one direction. The opposite side of the road has a series of arrows clearly pointing in the opposite direction. The shops and the shopping area are built close to the main road, with narrow pavements, leaving little room for people to pass one another and still comply with the social distancing recommendations.

The main shopping road is a one way road for traffic and the town gets exceedingly busy at times. Some incredibly ignorant, unenlightened people, will insist on walking along the pavements in the wrong direction causing other pedestrians to walk in the road to maintain the social distancing regulations. Very few people wear a face covering except for when they enter the shops, where it is a legal requirement.

We tend to avoid shopping in town unless it’s absolutely essential, but of course there are times when a visit to the Pharmacy or the Optician or the Hairdressers makes it unavoidable.

At this particularly unusual time during this obnoxious Coronavirus pandemic going into town will always be accompanied by an unpleasant, uncomfortable feeling.

THE HACKING ATTEMPT

by John Yeo

There’s nothing worse than the horrific feeling when you suddenly realise you are under attack and in danger of your social media account getting hacked. Suddenly you begin to get sundry messages from a few friends enquiring about a post that purportedly comes from you. Then the fight begins as you hastily check all the latest messages and posts and the realisation begins to sink in that there is an online battle in progress. One message from a family member who instantly realised what was going on, cautioned with the advice to immediately change the password and a report should be sent to the social media site. Strangely an unknown ‘dodgy’ account had surfaced that had my photograph and we both reported this to the social media site.

Unbelievably while all this was going on there was a drop in the strength of our internet network signal and I was unable to do much as the signal became weak and started to get weaker. Eventually I was able to put out several messages warning my friends not to open any links that were purportedly to be from me on any of our mutual sites.

The social media site then emailed to report the suspect site was not pretending to be me. I had to dispute this and I immediately emailed them back pointing out that it was my photograph. The whole site then suddenly disappeared.

Slowly I proceeded to delete all the unexplained messages on the social media site and things quickly returned to some semblance of normality.

I’m now in the process of changing many of my passwords and personal details on this particular social media site. A frightening day revealing the  ongoing perils of using social media.

LONELINESS

LONELINESS

by John Yeo

There is a common condition that is an insidious state of mind that comes upon many, many people, irrespective of social standing or age group. I refer of course to the effects of loneliness which can be a killer that stunts the personality and eats away at a person’s self-esteem. The punishing effects of isolation are infinitely worse at present, due to a tiny lethal virus that spreads through social contact.

We have several friends who have lost their partners after many years of a happy relationship, who were struggling with loneliness even before the ongoing Covid pandemic that is sweeping the world. Sadly now in this time of lockdown isolation, these friends are obviously feeling more isolated than ever. The government advice is to stay safe and keep a regulated distance away from others.

This practical advice, based on hard scientific evidence is just one of the harsh measures that increases the solitude of many lonely people. Pubs, clubs and cafes are locked down as well as most social and sporting activities where people could meet and socialise with one another.

There is nothing to beat social contact with a walking, talking, human being, as opposed to the cold online, or telephone contact that people are reduced to at present.

The emotional  effects of this sort of situation can be devastating to the sense of identity and forces a deterioration in one’s self confidence. Not being able to fully connect with others leads to a slow insidious corrosion of self esteem that finally affects our communication skills, making it harder to form lasting friendships in the future.

For those of us who are lucky enough to be in a stable rewarding relationship it becomes something of a huge responsibility to just reach out and take time to talk through the mask of isolation.

The proverbial Good Samaritan would be nursing the psychological wounds today of the friend or neighbour who has been robbed of their self esteem by this evil virus and trapped in this cage of loneliness.

DEMENTIA

WEDNESDAY 21st OCTOBER 2020 ~ BLOG POST

PROMPT ~ Write about your biggest fear.

DEMENTIA

by John Yeo

As an independent healthy young man I developed into an equally independent healthy middle aged adult. I have been fortunate enough to share my life with strong minded independent women and my attitude to life has always been secure and ongoing. Like many others of my age group, I have always felt thoroughly competent and many years younger in my outlook than my years would outwardly suggest. I’m sure most people feel so much younger and stronger than their years and perhaps this is a natural reaction to the aging process.

As I grow older in years I feel I have always known my biggest fear and I take steps to avoid succumbing to the sad mental decline that is dementia. I dislike and I will eternally dread the thought of becoming totally dependent on others for many of my needs. I try hard to use my brain in as many ways as possible to attempt to delay the certain loss of mental acuity that invariably comes to us all, with the slow passing of the years. I keep fit and healthy and enjoy a balanced diet.

I use my brain in as many ways as possible and hope this is helping to slow and perhaps stem the tide of the insidious onset of any form of dementia.

I check my memory processes continually and carry out personal exercises in generating visual and verbal memory constructions.

I’m aware of the early symptoms of Mild Cognitive Impairment and I continually check myself for any of these telltale signs of cell degeneration.

I read up on anything and everything I can find to become fully  aware of the signs of dementia and I research for encouraging changes in diet or lifestyle to combat this mental insubordination.

Perhaps I should say my absolute biggest fear and dread is succumbing to dementia and slowly becoming an insidious burden on my dear wife Margaret.

THE FLIGHT TO FREEDOM

by John Yeo

We survived the unruly protection of the nest.

There were two of us left on the final day
Pushing and fighting for survival of the fittest .

The others died slowly and wasted away.
One day we were forced to fend for ourselves.
Pushed into flight by our parents insistence
Our shining iridescent plumage glistened

Feathers spread. becoming powerful wings.
~

Gliding, soaring gracefully, a bird on the move,
A fully fledged miracle flying in heaven’s high.
Soaring close to the clouds floating above.
Survival in the folds of an unpredictable sky.
Calling loudly with a natural melody
Revelling in a new found freedom of spirit.
A powerful instinctive natural urge to belong
To the freedom of the life we were now to inherit.

CAGED WITH SADNESS

by John Yeo

“Do you have to torture me, trapped in here?
I enjoy your treats when I cry out to you.
I think you like the sound of my voice
Complaining in tune.”
~
“I particularly hate that hook by the window,
Where you hang this prison sometimes.
I envy the freedom of birds in flight.
My soul breaks out in tune.”
~
“My heart is slowly wasting away
I am losing the urge to keep up the fight
Yet whenever I try to reach you to beg for release
You reward my tune with a treat.”

PANDEMIC PURSUITS

MONDAY 19th OCTOBER 2020 ~ BLOG POST.

PANDEMIC PURSUITS

I have been thinking about the ways we are spending our dual  self-centred time during this horrible pandemic. It’s amazing how we constructively fill in the hours with hardly any time to spare to look around.

After a good breakfast we spend time nourishing our brain cells. Margaret completes daily crossword and sudoku puzzles published in the Daily Mail and I play online chess and scrabble against friends, including Margaret.

We both spend a good few hours on our allotment, Margaret has cut back on the allotment work now the winter is setting in and she sometimes chooses to spend time at home catching up with her other chores.

Sporadically, weather permitting lately, we will go for an active walk around the block together.

We both read a lot, laugh a lot and enjoy each other’s company a lot.

We also both enjoy taking part in regular Tai Chi sessions via YouTube, which stretches our muscles and keeps our joints flexible. The breathing and relaxation part of these exercises are a marvellous way to defeat the lockdown blues.

I will lose myself in enhancing my cerebral health by writing and composing poetry. In between using her creative cookery skills to produce some tasty evening meals, Margaret will then read everything I write and make some constructive criticism. Then after our evening meal we will spend the evening watching some favourite television programmes or listening to music.

IF ONLY WE COULD

by John Yeo

If only we could…

Stay fit and healthy forever without the need for medical attention, ever.

If only we could…

Defeat the aging process allowing our minds and souls to enjoy cerebral pleasure.

If only we could…

Discover everything we need to know without the need of study to be eternally clever.

If only we could…

See beneath the surface of our minds and to just love and care for one another.

If only we could…

Amalgamate our beliefs and live happily together following a single dream forever.

If only we could…

Learn to live without fighting or warfare and we were happy to live peacefully together.

If only we could…

Share our resources and grow sufficient food in this world without starvation wherever.

If only we could…

Find that special soulmate and live happily with the love of a life spent together.

If only we could… If only!!

DAMION

SATURDAY 17th OCTOBER 2020 ~ FLASH FICTION

PROMPT ~ Three words: Long lost brother.

DAMION

by John Yeo

I was curious to find an unexpected visitor on my doorstep when I returned from work today. I encountered a man who looked about ten years older than me leaning up against the doorpost. He had long fair hair, with striking green eyes. His eyes were noticeable as he had a permanent squint and he wore a pair of rather large plastic spectacles. He was over six feet tall and towered above me as he gave an impudent grin and said, ‘Hi! Pleased to meet you. I’m Damion, your long lost step-brother.’

These words were delivered with a broad West Country accent. I was taken aback and I looked up at him and replied, ‘Are you mad? I don’t understand what you’re talking about. Get out of here before I call the police and have you removed.’

‘Hear me out and I will explain, I promise you we’re brothers, we have the same father, George Alexander. I was born in Somerset, where our father had set up a second home with my mother. I was the product of that relationship.’  This was said with the same impertinent grin.

I responded angrily, ‘You’re obviously mistaken Damion! You look nothing like me and I don’t believe a word of your story. Now get out of here before I call the police.’

He nonchalantly grinned and pulled a large envelope from his pocket and withdrew some photographs.

LUCIDITY EPITOMIZED

by John Yeo

The clarity was crystal clear

Every word was clearly defined,

As the solution began to appear

The facts were simply refined,

The answer was finally here

Born in the cells of a lucid mind.

Cold emotion helped to steer

Lucidity to the undefined.
