LOST IN LAVA SWIRLS

Snow builds in mountainous waves

Lockdown travel, harsh restrictions

Meandering, drifting thought-waves 

During dreary snow-encrusted days,

Lost in deep imagination’s sunshine 

Miles away across the ocean.

~

Thoughts of Mount Etna’s last eruption

Sunshine with swirls of ash descending

Colourful, dramatic, awe-inspiring,

Lava; scorching everything in its path,

Thickening ash darkens the Italian sky

My mind meandering lost in the lava swirls.

Mount Etna erupted on 17th February 2021 with no injuries or damage caused.

~

The Italian volcano Mount Etna has erupted for the first time this year 2021.

The volcano which is located on the island of Sicily, erupted on Tuesday, sending jets of lava into the sky.

Pictures shared on social media showed a plume of smoke rising from the mountain and ash raining down on buildings.

A nearby airport in Catania, was forced to close temporarily due to ash in the air making it unsafe to fly but there have been no reports of injuries or damage from the eruption.

Beautiful sunshine promised peace with tranquility

The view was stunning from the precipitous cliffs,

Changeable skies oversaw a delicate fragility.

A peaceful prospect, masking seasonal volatility

In spite of tempestuous, turbulent conflicts

Beautiful sunshine promised peace with tranquility.

Mild breezes added to the peace with serenity
Blue skies follow grey skies in a chain of shifts

Changeable skies oversaw a delicate fragility.

~

High waves crashed into the shoreline relentlessly

Seasonal turbulence demanding peace that submits

Beautiful sunshine promised peace with tranquility.

Harsh winds and rain threaten rapid changeability

Breathtaking, precipitous, rugged beauty persists

Changeable skies oversaw a delicate fragility.

~

Turbulent tranquility bodes for a natural hostility

A peaceful stormy beauty that belies the mix

THE WAY THINGS USED TO BE

Peter and his sister Jane were visiting their granny for tea,

‘Hello Granny! our teacher said, we should ask you please

To remember your life and the way things used to be’.

Granny yawned, and bluntly said; ‘Hard times, but we were free

Of social distancing, masks and a pandemic of death and disease’.

Peter and his sister Jane were visiting their granny for tea.

~

‘We didn’t have the internet Zoom, Facebook or Twitter you see’

Granny said, ‘Things were simpler then, it will not be a squeeze

For me to remember life and the way things used to be.

~

There weren’t many aircraft jetting off, on holiday over the sea

We never needed to quarantine from death or a viral sneeze’.

Peter and his sister Jane were visiting their granny for tea.

~

‘Food was too scarce to hoard; we fought a war to be free.

We never had to keep washing our hands, it seems a wheeze

When I remember life and the way things used to be.

~

I remember the times when simple things made me happy

Sun shining on the fields, laughing, playing and climbing trees’.

PARADISE

We have been here now for ten long years.
The sun rises daily in a clear blue sky
We are privileged to be here,
We have all we need.

Fish from the depths of a warm blue sea
Fruits of the earth are plentiful and sweet.
Cut off from the hustle and bustle of life.
Time passes slowly.

We rely on the boat for news and supplies,
The weather is usually kind and clear
Tornadoes or cyclones are threatened
Sometimes very near.

Our way of life is envied by many.
We are lucky to be living in paradise.
The grass is always greener over there.
Before the boredom sets in.

I would sit and dream of a carefree life
When on the beach passing time.
A life full of labour saving machines.
Cashpoints, the city and super cars.

Theatre, cinema and fast moving lives,
Clubs and shops full of luxury goods.
Fashion and interesting super malls,
With people everywhere.

Education, opportunities, time to save
Rushing from home to the office,
Mixing with folk from around the world.
Enjoying life to the full.

Then I would turn and look into your eyes
Stretch and leisurely take your hand,
Smile sweetly and say
“Perhaps we will book a holiday in the city.

Some-day”

Lillie McFerrin~Five Sentence Fiction~ Prompt word ~ HUNGER

SHADES OF HUNGER

Young Billy was enduring shopping with his Mum, in the mall, and he could hardly wait to eat.

Mkabwe went hunting in the bush, with his Dad looking for food, anything the family could eat.

Hurry up Mum, I’m starving, said Billy rubbing his stomach, we always have a McDonalds here.

Mkabwe picked up a grub from the dusty floor of a dry river bed, no water flowed, he had not eaten for two days.

Both boys from different worlds know hunger in different ways.

NEW SURROUNDINGS

The postman just brought something,

The flap clatters and falls

I put my teacup on the table 

Then slowly I enter the hall.

The cat follows, rubbing my leg,

A picture postcard lies on the mat.

I slowly bend to examine,

The beautiful pictures stand out.

Palm trees beaches and blue skies

Green trees and flowery sunshine.

I turn to the writing over

A message of love and care.

~

We are having a holiday Granddad,

We really wish you were here.

I turn to look at my view

Concrete flats and factories where.

With smoking chimneys and traffic,

The contrast is shockingly clear.

~

I have lived in this flat alone now

For five and twenty years.

Sometimes I hear from the family,

None of them ever come here

 I pick up the postcard again

My mind flies to new surroundings.

~

I wish I was there.
