Daily Nature Log. 7th July 2026

A woodpigeon mountaineer

The Walk Narrative
The westerly wind added a deceptive chill to the 21°C air today, making it feel closer to 24°C as I set out around the outskirts of the golf course. Half a dozen jackdaws kicked off the morning’s sightings, foraging right at the edge of the grass. Along the railway line, a bramble hedge was alive with a flurry of swiftly moving butterflies, while a lone gull drifted lazily overhead.

The walk offered plenty of friendly encounters—including a well-trimmed Poodle, a curly-haired Lurcher, and a massive dog that Google Lens later flagged as a Pyrenean Mastiff.

Out on the greens, an unusual crew of six woodpigeons were busy feeding, completely unbothered by the golfers.
Heading up to the clifftops, the shrubs were absolutely buzzing with small white and cabbage white butterflies, while a lively flock of around twenty sparrows played hide-and-seek in the bushes.

Below, the tide was high, swallowing up the sandy beach, but I managed to snap a brilliant shot of a woodpigeon quite literally clinging to the sheer cliff face. After a pleasant stroll through the promenade gardens—where the massive purple Globe Artichoke flowers were covered in bees—I headed back, passing colourful clumps of yellow ragwort, beach roses, poppies, and evening primrose.
