FRESH AIR

by John Yeo

The tension in the room had been slowly building to a crescendo. The news had had a devastating effect on the assembled directors and creative money men. The fantastic news had been leaked in advance, air was the new force that would drive everything in the future. Electric power was now redundant as were all the associated fuels and gasses that had previously kept the wheels of life turning.
The presenter was very passionate about his subject. Air, ordinary free air will provide endless power for everything in the future, at the touch of a button air would now produce endless supplies of power. A tiny alteration in the ingredients that make up fresh air is all that is required and the piped results would make up a free miracle fuel.
This bombshell provoked a very savage unexpected reaction from certain sections of the audience, particularly among the fuel and oil industry. This will affect many, many people, jobs and employment in our industries will be wiped out. Savagely demanding that this breakthrough should be hidden and buried, never to be heard of again.
Too late replied the presenter, the genie is now out of the lamp, a lamp that will in future be powered by fresh air.

ONCE ~100 Word challenge ~Velvet Verbosity

MEMORY

by John Yeo

Granddad, what do you see?
I see visions of life before you were born
Hardship and poverty on the farm.
Up at dawn, out in the fields
Working through till dusk.

~

Granddad, what do you feel?
I feel sorrow at the wars and violence now,
The fighting and the hunger far away
Children dying of thirst and disease
I am too old to intervene now.

~

Granddad, what would you change?
I would fight for truth and war renounce
I would spread my wings and travel
To lands far away to help the poor
I was as young as you, ONCE.

HE WHO HESITATES

by John Yeo

John and Peter were classmates,

Friends right the way through college.

One day, John in a jovial manner

Bet Peter, he could get Margaret, the school beauty

To promise to come out on a date.

Peter replied “You’re on,

Margaret is far too beautiful for the likes of you!

She never dates with anyone.”

John then became very resolute

He asked the lovely Margaret out for a date.

O.K! She said, smiling prettily.

Stairway to Heaven

by John Yeo

Old Jack had been Head Gardener at the Hall for twenty years. One day Lord Melbury who liked to supervise Jack and the team moving trees and shrubs on the estate, stumbled across the magical corner where his children had loved to play. The stairway to the stars they had called the overgrown steps leading up to a ledge that was the lookout spot for the whole garden.

“Get rid of those old steps Jack, They spoil the look of the garden!”

“Yes sir!’ Jack replied, knowing full well they would both forget the order.

The magical mysterious stairway survived.

DEATH CHIMES

by John Yeo

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The family had heard the chimes, chiming for them six times.
Mary and her family lived in fear of the death chimes.
Many neighbours and friends were dying and it was very difficult to avoid leaving the house for food.
People were fleeing fast, moving away from the area, spreading the plague.
There were robbers, looters and killers, very few police were alive.
The biggest fear of everyone was to hear the bell on the death cart.
The bodies were piled high on the death cart as the loaded cart left for mass graves.
The bell may chime for thee!
THE AWAKENING
by John Yeo ©
The patient was an elderly lady who had been in a coma for two weeks in the intensive therapy unit.
No identification had been found on her after the accident had occurred and she was admitted to the hospital.
Knocked down by a hit and run driver on the week before Christmas began she was on her own here, the police were trying to trace her family through missing persons reports.
Then, her eyes opened and alighted on a jolly greetings card, one of the nurses had placed by her bedside.
She looked at the picture of a cheery little dog, chewing a hat and said one word, “Christmas”.
THE THOUGHTFUL, FERVENT, BRILLIANT BRAIN
by John Yeo
Where? He wondered in silent awe
Thoughtful, Enquiring! Why? How? When?
Fervently searching for answers.
Gazing up on a starry night
A puzzle to overwhelm the senses.
The universe a wonder to the thoughtful mind,
A fiery bright shining firmament.
Burning, Boiling, without relent.
A puzzle to overpower the mind.
The mind, a whirl of discontent,
Fervent, Brilliant, always alight.
The neurons and axions firing in flight.
A Thoughtful, Fervent, Brilliant Brain.
Fervently searching for answers.
A GLIMMER OF INNOCENCE
by John Yeo
The investigating detective was questioning a burglary suspect, a regular offender who was caught in the act.
“You mean, you really are pleading your innocence, you were caught in the act of trying to enter the house!
You are entitled to a lawyer even though you haven’t got a glimmer of hope, lawyers cannot change reality.”
After consultation, the lawyer affirmed the plea of innocence as he had an explanation.
“Yes”‘ shouted the suspect, “I saw a glimmer of light coming from the back window and I thought the house was on fire, I forgot it was Christmas.”
THE LOAN SHARK
by John Yeo
The taste of power and control is irresistible. The predators will always seek new prey to satisfy their lust. The loan-shark wove his net very densely and succinctly to tempt his clients. His velvet silky tone masked the danger. “Let me help you” he smiled as he invited his unsuspecting clients into his web of debt. I can help you to be free from care and worry. He then proceeded to suck the life-blood from his prey, slowly drawing the matter out with his professional fangs, slowly feeding from the unwitting, unwilling carcass of a once living, breathing, trusting entity.
MAGIC ON THE MOOR
by John Yeo
As he began his search, the darkness descended very quickly on the moor. It was very misty and it quickly became almost impossible to see the path ahead.
He became more and more worried about Sarah, who had stormed off out into the night, from their isolated cottage on the moor, after a tiff. He turned on the flashlight and found the glaring beam reflected the light back at him from the thick mist that enveloped everything on both sides of the path. Suddenly he tripped over a log on the path. His heart started beating very fast as he realised he had stumbled over soft flesh, then he realised he had stumbled over a body lying aross the path.
“Sarah”! He shouted, when he recognised her red hair and her face became visible.
“David” she murmured, as she stirred, “I tripped and fell and I have hurt my leg”.
“Thank God you are alive!” He exclaimed, “Let me help you home.”
He put his arms around her, holding her up with his shoulder. They hobbled back along the path to the warmth of the cottage.
