ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE

The Doctor gave Mother a thorough examination, hoping against hope that his suspicions were wrong.
He looked grim after he had studied the results, the cancer had spread uncontrollably.
Mother smiled benignly, without fully understanding the gravity of the situation.
“Don’t worry dear, have no fear, I will still be here next year.
I trust in God and my horoscope, the tea leaf pictures are very clear, I will win the lottery of life.”

WATER WARS

by John Yeo  ©

The river became a stream when the water was diverted to the factory farm. The local smallholders were up in arms as the water supply began to dry up. War was declared on the rich family who owned the huge farm. When a massive explosion blew the dam to smithereens, a body was discovered floating face down among the detritus revealed by the low water and the residue of the explosion. When police were summoned by the farmer to investigate the crime, the farmer was arrested for constructing an illegal dam and causing death by negligence. Water wars began again.

A Rude Awakening

by John Yeo

The day was murky.  and grey, I felt out of the rhythm and flow of life. There was no question about it, I was feeling lazy and very lethargic. I stumbled on a loose paving stone, Tripped and fell As unsteady in body as I was in mind. A kindly passer-by helped me up to gain my balance. “Don’t worry dear we all get drunk now and again!” Shocked, I snapped. “Thank-you for your unthoughtful words! I don’t drink!” Then I was sorry for being so blunt, Without thought or gratitude for her help. I apologised and she smiled. Somehow I was not feeling lethargic any more. Very sharp and thoughtful.

THE COPPER KETTLE~~Velvet Verbosity~100 word challenge

THE COPPER KETTLE

by John Yeo

Grandma possessed a highly polished dented copper kettle, very well-used. We enjoyed our tea in the days before she passed away. We children would swear it was a magic kettle. One day we were playing in the kitchen when a very fierce looking dog entered the open door, snarling and growling with huge yellow teeth. Grandma used some magical words, grabbed the copper kettle from the hot stove and threw it at the dog, shouting these unfamiliar words. The dog yelped and fled. Grandma made us promise to never use these magical words as we would be in serious trouble.

HIGHWAY ROBBERY~FOILED

by John Yeo

The street was crowded with families and shoppers, mingling with tourists, shopping, browsing, searching for the satisfaction of fulfilling a desire.
Suddenly a cry of alarm rang out. “My purse, stop thief!” Two young men were running, elbowing and pushing their way through the crowd to escape.
An elderly man stood firmly in their way, they both went on the attack. A bad move! The 70 year old ex-soldier, very fit and supremely hard, knocked them down. The police arrived, arrested the thieves and escorted them to hospital. The elderly man disappeared into the crowd, never to be seen again.

VOICES

by John Yeo

Would anyone know if there was an alien invasion? I asked the Doctor as I lay on his couch.
“Hmm!”
I mean, I noticed this little fellow on a branch in our garden, Just another stick insect, I thought. Then suddenly the creature addressed me and told me to be careful where I trod or I would squash his spaceship. “
Hmm! Do you often hear voices?”
Yes! I can hear your voice quite clearly and my wife never stops talking.
Hmm! I mean, do insects often talk to you?
No, this one was unique and offered to show me a plant that would make me immortal.
Hmm! Did you reply and jot the details down?
No, I did not have a pen at the time and I have forgotten what the plant was, I was unable to question him further as a passing bird flew down and gobbled him up.
Hmm! Tell me about your relationship with your Mother?

Velvet-Verbosity~100-word-challenge~Write-100-words-on-the-word~~PERCHED~~

ALARM CALL

By John Yeo

We were exploring the remote dense African jungle, My colleagues and I had  a grant from our university to search for rare medicinal plants. Suddenly we were confronted with a raging torrent of water, a tributary to a very large river. There was no way around this obstacle. To continue our journey we would have to find a way across.
Then our local guide shimmied up a very large Baobab tree. Perched on a branch he made a very loud piercing whistling call, many times.
Shortly after a fleet of canoes arrived to ferry us to the other side.

BEHIND THE MASK

Ermilia's Picture it and Write~Masks

Image from Ermila’s blog on wordpress

Our friends the next door neighbours are always in the red, heavily in debt, but always so very happy.

We have always worked very hard for every penny we have, and we save our money for a rainy day.

They are lucky, going off on a cruise around the world, how do they manage that with all their bills?

We are off to a guest house in Southend-on-sea, all we can afford, unlike some careless people.

We thought they were crooks until we found out the truth, they won a lot of money on the lottery.

KLEPTO~AUTO~MANIAC

by John Yeo

The difficulty of auto-mania is keeping a firm grip on the wheel. George was a confirmed kleptomaniac with a penchant for vehicles. The latest addition to his collection was stolen from a scrap yard. George planned to renovate and bring this interesting vehicle to life.

The police arrived and arrested George for parking this very unique stolen property outside his front door.

In court the learned Judge looked at George and asked.  “Why?”

George shrugged his shoulders, then mumbled. “I dunno!”

The Judge asked for a psychiatric assessment and later ordered George to be released into the care of the local hospital car mechanic.

DEADLY DEW

by John Yeo

6am start today. Keen to finish the work I have planned on my allotment, I decide to break my normal habits and cut across the fields. There has been a very early mist and the grass is covered with dewy droplets of water. I am not the first person to cross this field, there is a trail of someone else’s footprints and I unconsciously follow these tracks. Up ahead, I notice a figure slumped in the grass. I approach with caution and discover Walter our farmers hand lying in the damp grass, collapsed and unable to move. I dial 999.
