Sheringham Park

Daily Nature Log ✍️

A sudden autumn chill was in the air as I set out along the central path at Sheringham Park, with Margaret settled in the café over a tea and cheese scone. A brisk westerly wind gave a sharp edge to the afternoon, but the autumn colours quickly drew my attention. I stopped to photograph a grand ancient beech, followed by a golden acer framed by a massive sweet chestnut laden with green burrs—a future banquet for local jays and squirrels.

Rhododendron

Dipping into the dense woodland, I was surprised to spot a white rhododendron in full, unexpected bloom against a backdrop of stately trees and lush ferns. Wildlife kept me company throughout: a robin darting into cover, a grey squirrel darting across my path near the hill, and another scurrying under a bush. Reaching the woodland edge revealed a magnificent panoramic view across cattle-dotted pastures stretching all the way to the sea.

Thatched shelter

After capturing shots of ancient oaks, beeches, firs, and a charming thatched shelter, I took a side trail to snap a picture of Sheringham Hall. The dog parade continued as I walked back—black Labradors, greyhounds, a golden retriever, a pair of Cairns and Westies, and even a holly bush blazing with scarlet berries. I finally rejoined Margaret back at the café, surrounded by a few well-behaved canine companions resting after their own afternoon stroll.
