AFTERNOON TEA

by John Yeo

The ladies of the local WI were taking afternoon tea in a very busy tourist area of the city. The sun shone beautifully as many people strolled by enjoying the pleasures of a peaceful afternoon.
That was before the siren of an approaching ambulance in the distance, broke the spell. The ambulance was unable to get through, as the pathway was too narrow. A crowd quickly gathered around a young woman who was lying on the ground obviously in the later stages of her pregnancy.
Doris quickly left her WI friends at the table and leapt into action. “Get hot water and towels from the restaurant! Quickly” she shouted. Soon the hearty cries of a new-born child could be heard as Doris calmly exclaimed.
        “It’s a girl.”
Later when the paramedics finally arrived, Doris explained she had been a midwife for thirty years during her working life.
“I’m going to name my baby Doris, after you.” said the grateful young Mum.
“No don’t do that, she wont thank you for that.” Laughed Doris.

POUR SOME SUGAR ON ME

By John Yeo

The man in the black mask and cloak raced across the roof tops and silently jumped between two close buildings. Far below, there was a distant sound of screeching sirens as the emergency services arrived at the building he had just left. The man smiled, and continued moving randomly between several more buildings, then he opened a rucksack and donned a white coat. Placing the mask and cloak with a pair of black gloves inside the bag, he calmly walked down a metal fire-escape into the hospital below.

“Good evening, Dr Airy,” said a harassed looking Sister. “Sorry I can’t stop. We have an emergency on the ward.”

“Good evening! Please go ahead, I am on my way to my office, if I am required, I am carrying the bleep tonight.”

“Yes Doctor!”

There had been a serious incident earlier in the evening, the Doctor was informed by his colleague, Dr Jenny Fergusson.
“An intruder wearing black, has entered the canteen and mysteriously stolen a massive quantity of sugar.”

“Sugar!” Dr Airy echoed. As his ears suddenly started growing and facial hair began sprouting rapidly on his cheeks.

Startled, Dr Jenny exclaimed, “Doctor! Your appearance is physically changing! What is happening to you?”

“I’m afraid I am unsure, Dr. Fergusson, Please pick up that sugar bowl there, and pour it over my face. I am undergoing a phsyical change, since I started treating a patient with a radioactive disease. My protective clothing was pulled off by the aggressive patient. I have discovered that the only antidote is the application of sugar.”

“Certainly Doctor, or whoever you are now.” said the mischievous Dr. Ferguson. Pressing the alarm button.
Two orderlies dashed in and removed the now unrecognisable Doctor to the Psychiatric unit, where he remains to this day.

SORRY, I’M BUSY

by John Yeo

They were locked in the kitchen of a remote farmhouse in the hills. A farm in the deepest valley, where the crystal clear water ran down the hills into a lake.
The food supplies were finished and the pains were gnawing at his stomach. Jodie, his little sister, kept passing out in a dead faint, she would come round with tears in her soulful eyes and look appealingly at him. There was nothing he could do, since their Mum and Dad had been killed, no-one had been to the house. The bodies were still lying on the floor where the robbers had left them. He had tried to get a line out on the phone only to find the robbers had ripped the wires away and disconnected the telephone. Then, he discovered a mobile phone next to his parents bed, he hadn’t noticed it lying there before and he pressed a button that dialled his Uncles number. The ringing tone was answered by a recorded voice that kept repeating, “Sorry, I’m busy, right now. Please leave your message and I will get back to you later!” “Sorry, I’m busy, right now…………

My heartfelt tribute to a very special person

When I first heard the news of the death of my special friend Barb, we were out of range of an Internet connection and I will never forget the feelings of frustration as I was unable to express my grief and genuine heartfelt sorrow at the loss of a very special part of my life. Although we had never met each other, it was a great pleasure , communicating with her on a weekly basis through our writing, and my regular responses to her excellent writing prompts. I already sadly miss her and her family of writers. We were saddened this week to hear of a death in our family, and we both sincerely sympathise with her husband and family in their tragic loss. God rest her soul in peace, she will always be surrounded by the deep affection of many writers around the world who were inspired by her prompts, her support, and the wonderful way she always finished with the words “Be Well!”

She will be sadly missed by Marg and I. Rest in peace my friend.

For today’s prompt, write a shopping poem.

LAST MINUTE!

by John Yeo

“Come on Mum! Hurry up, we have to do everything now!
It must be done by a certain time! Have you got the list?
Straight away, without delay, amid the appalling crush.
We must get everything now, in a fast and furious rush
We must get things under full control, time is passing by.

A pair of slippers for Grumps, his are wearing out fast.
A box of chocolates for Grandma to nibble by the fire.
Toys for the kids, go for the best to ignite their interest.
Uncle will welcome socks, in dazzling fluorescent green.
Hampers all around the family, made up specially by us.

For Aunt Mary, delicate, lacy white hankies are nice.
The cousins will welcome a bottle of sparkling wine
Two cases should be enough to nicely go around.
We must do it all today, in a fast and furious rush
Straight away, without delay, amid the appalling crush.

This is a mega-market place, everything is right here,
Piled up and for sale, to take home some Christmas cheer.
Still once we get home wth the shopping done,
We can raise a glass of cheer. Cheers everyone!
Good job this shopping season only comes once a year”

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYBODY!

MAN-TRAPS

by John Yeo

The ship landed on an Earth-like planet, a huge single green sea, bounded on all sides by a mountainous land. The vegetation was stunning, multi-coloured trees, covered in succulent fruit that looked edible and appetising.

“Looks like we have found what we are looking for!”  The Captain said to his second officer, who was operating the outer periscope to survey the terrain.

“Yes Sir, there doesn’t seem to be any visible inhabitants, just those strange purple mushroom-shaped plants on the fringes of that forest.”
Johnson, the second officer, had travelled with the Captain on many missions before.

“Good!” Exclaimed the Captain, “We’ll send an exploratory team and a rover to explore.
As the team got out from the rover, and began walking forwards there was a whoosh as a tentacle whipped out from one of the plants and picked up an explorer and calmly swallowed him. The other members of the team tried to escape but they were surrounded by alien plants.  Cousins of the Earth’s, Venus fly-trap. Alien man-traps.

A prompt response for “INSPIRATION MONDAY:” ~ NETHERDOOR

NETHERDOOR

by John Yeo

Billy coughed and spluttered as he shouted with glee. “It’s true, unbelievably true. Google doesn’t know!”

“Google doesn’t know!” Betty laughed, “Impossible, Google knows everything, I rely on Google a lot!”

“Google has no response to Netherdoor. I wanted to find out about Netherdoor before we make the trip. Where we are going, the brochure clearly says to go through Netherdoor, and take the magical mystery tour of Netherworld.” Billy was absolutely flummoxed and amazed at this fact.

“Oh! Come on Billy! Google knows everything: Are you sure you typed the words in correctly?” Betty was astonished. “What did they come up with?” She trusted in Google implicitly.

Billy smiled as he said.. “All sorts of irrelevant, nonsensical advertising, for books and games, based on the medieval meaning of the Netherworld, as the underworld or hell. No guidebooks for the real magical Netherworld behind the Netherdoor. Google hasn’t got a clue about the world on the other side of the real Netherdoor.”

Betty asked Billy for the brochure, to check the spelling as she still firmly believed in the limitless power of the knowledge available through Google.

“The brochure?” Billy giggled, amused at her reaction to the fallibility of the powerful search engine. “I thought you had the brochure, don’t tell me the brochure has vanished!”

Betty looked bemused as she started to hunt everywhere for the missing brochure. “It is here somewhere Billy. I know for certain I saw it. Are you sure you haven’t got it? How can we go if we don’t know where the Netherdoor to the Netherworld is located. Shall I ask Google where it is again?” Betty grabbed her iPad and keyed in Netherdoor again.

Suddenly a metallic voice asked “How can I help you?” Betty was startled, she had forgotten Google had learned to talk. Quickly she recovered and explained the situation. “I’m sorry I didn’t get that!”

Betty was shocked. Google is fallible! “What are we going to do Billy? We are on our own, we will have to find the brochure.”

Billy nodded and agreed, as he asked, “Where is the brochure?”

“OK!” said Billy, with a twinkle in his eye. “Ask Google?”

Betty suddenly caught on and replied, “I have an idea lets ask Google the way to Disneyland instead. I am sure they know where that is.

“OK!” said Billy, with a twinkle in his eye. “Ask Google?”

A SERIOUS MISTAKE

by John Yeo

My name is Kate,
I am a healer now, I have my medical degree. I will say a fond farewell to my family and friends as my boyfriend, Marcus and I are journeying to Africa to take up voluntary employment with the Flying Doctor service. We have decided to take the opportunity to learn and practice medicine in this challenging and varied environment.
My Father and Mother are firmly behind our plans. Dad has always backed me in my wilder plans, from the memorable day I came home from school and announced I was taking up a new hobby.

Marcus was a bit dubious at first; “What about our future careers? “

“Don’t worry Marcus, I am sure we will be fine, with our self-reliance and skills, this will be very good for our future lives together.” I reassured him, with my fingers firmly crossed and a smile on my face.

Marcus and I settled into our new vocation, and experienced a wide variety of varied, and sometimes very sad situations . We had to work separately, although we were attached to the same team, we were working with separate pilots. We would meet up in the late evening and share some very precious weekends together.

One memorable day, I was approached by a young man, who appealed to me and begged me to go with him to look at his Mother, who had taken a fall. Contrary to all the warnings and advice from all concerned, I decided to examine his Mother, and I entered a hut to find a figure prone under a blanket. Suddenly another man leapt up and went to grab me as the first man suddenly lunged at me with an open-handed slap around my face.
The next few minutes will be relayed over and over in my thoughts and memories for ever. All my trained reflexes went into overdrive as I fought off these two men, and in the name of self-protection I had to break limbs on both men.
After I had got my breath back, I called the police and an ambulance and spent the next few minutes using my medical skills to reset their broken bones.

Oh! I forgot to mention my new hobby my Father had approved of, and encouraged me to take up, was martial arts and boxing.

Later the authorities were holding an investigation with a view to charging the two men with assault. I decided to drop all charges and let them go.
Everyone agreed they had probably learned a lesson, and punishment had already been severely administered.
My reputation went before me wherever I went after that incident, and the locals would be queuing up to see me.

Marcus and I were soon working together, when he obtained a pilots licence. We worked in Africa for three years sharing many hair-raising adventures together.

A prompt response for “INSPIRATION MONDAY:” ~ ELEMENTALLY MY DEAR

ELEMENTALLY MY DEAR

by John Yeo

“Why? Darling what is the problem?”

“You know how much I dislike the man, especially after the way he behaved towards his wife and child. The idiot just up and abandoned them, leaving home with the first woman who happened along. Bringing the subject down to the simplest element of disgust I feel for him, hatred is not a pleasant word. However hatred and distaste together, go for a potent reason to analyse the basics. Why would a man just destroy everything he has built up over a number of years? I tell you my opinion is starkly simple, primitive, and basic, full of hate, disgust, and other elemental emotions.”

“Wow Darling! That is very strong reaction.”

“Simply Elementally my Dear.”
