The late afternoon sun

Daily Nature Log ✍️
A sharp autumn breeze dropped the 19°C afternoon to a nippy 17°C as I set off. A quartet of corvids—two crows and two magpies—scattered from beneath the pine trees as I approached the recreation ground. Nearby, a watchful wood pigeon kept guard over its hidden birch-tree nest from atop a tall lamppost, while a hungry dunnock feasted on fat red hawthorn berries.

Pacing the perimeter, I spotted a solitary black-headed gull grazing on the pitch before flushing eight wood pigeons dining in a quiet corner by the Cemetery Drive exit. Skirting the cemetery paths, a darting sparrow whisked into a bush, and a pair of leaf-rummaging crows burst into the air, taking two startled wood pigeons with them. Higher up the field, a scattered flock of around twenty rooks took flight in steady waves as I paused to photograph the vibrant sky, flora, and birdlife.

Leaving the cemetery, I caught sight of a prowling cat stalking through the hedgerow; Google Lens later pinpointed it as a sleek Bengal. Down by the leisure centre, ten feral pigeons lined the roofline under the watchful eye of a circling gull. Rounding off the loop, two gulls and a rook probed the turf at the recreation ground, and the original pair of crows had slipped back to their quiet haunt beneath the pines.

Today I walked for 1.87 miles in 40 minutes.
