Ichthyosis Vulgaris

by John Yeo

The day that Billy changed his appearance, he began to look like a fish, scaly skin broke out all over his face. The teacher said to him,
“Billy you are in the wrong country! No maybe you are in the wrong pond. Ha Ha!”
Billy blushed, and ran out of the classroom, his teacher apologised for the thoughtless remark and sent him to see the school nurse.
The trouble was no one at the school had ever seen anything like this before. Even the nurse was unsure of what to do for the best, and sent him home.
“You had better see your doctor Billy, I am sure he will know what to do!”
The doctor made an appointment for Billy to see a specialist in six weeks time.
Meanwhile, Billy was bullied and taunted every day, children can be cruel to someone who looks a little different from normal. Fatty Palmer, was the worst,
“Hey Fishface, you have had your chips! Get back into the frying pan!”
Billy cringed with embarrassment and backed away from the crowd, spending more and more time alone.
Stella became friends with him and gave him a lot of support. Stella’s father was a gymnastics teacher and she had learned a lot from him.
Fatty Palmer and his friends gleefully made fun out of the two of them,
“Here comes fish head and the trout, look out gang the freaks are about!”
Stella and Billy walked away together.
“Ignore them Billy,” said Stella, “We will only get into worse trouble.”

Billy went to the hospital and was examined in the skin clinic by a specialist who said.
“I am sorry to say you have a common inherited skin disorder called Ichthyosis Vulgaris, sadly there is no cure, but I can prescribe soothing creams and lotions. The symptoms should disappear in a short time and they may never return, but there is a chance they will come back in later years.”
“Ichthyosis what?”asked Billy’s Mum, “Your Dad had a similar thing on his chest Billy, very mild though.”
“That would be right,” said the consultant.

Some days later, Billy and Stella were walking home. Fatty Palmer and three boys were lying in wait for them, jumping out on the pavement they began jeering and threatening Billy. Stella took one look and went into action with a whirlwind of kicks and punches she brought Fatty down, and broke his arm. The other boys were on the receiving end of some very harsh punishment, before running away smartly.
Billy was astonished, Sella grinned and said. “My Dad is a black belt in Karate and he taught me a lot, I am also a black belt and I will show you how to look after yourself.

Billy and Stella stayed friends, became engaged, and got married. Of course that was ten very happy years ago now.

Ichthyosis_Vulgaris

Ichthyosis vulgaris is a skin condition that causes dry, dead skin cells to accumulate in patches on the surface of your skin. It’s also known as “fish scale disease” because the dead skin accumulates in a similar pattern to a fish’s scales. “IMAGE AND INFO FROM THE NET.”

Finish the story begins with:

“She lived a life that some would describe as being on edge.”
This precipice was such a rewarding place to balance Marg’s life. The sharp edge of some uncomfortable moments was cushioned by the rewards. The adrenaline of the excitement blended so well with the well hidden, well invested funds she had accumulated.
Sam had contacted Marg and they were to meet up with Delphine in London. Sam had produced two counterfeit U.S. five cent coins, that were allegedly minted at a factory in South Kensington. Dr Dickus and his henchmen planned to produce vast amounts of currency to flood the money markets and create worldwide instability. The coins were an exquisite clue to the larger denominations that were in production.
The information extracted from the prisoner in Alaska, led the team to a rundown, neglected industrial site. The plan was to swiftly destroy the counterfeiters, heavily guarded factory and hit Dickus where it would hurt him most. Marg and Sam with ……

A DIGNIFIED EXIT

by John Yeo

She sat on the throne of swords, denoting the powerful influences of the razor sharp effects of her power. The power of life and death that she was able to wield with a nod of her regal head, flowing with the long blonde hair of a Warrior Queen.
The ceremonial robes she was attired in, were made from red and grey woven silk. Her enemies said she always wore red, when she sat on the throne, to denote the blood-soaked terror of the untold thousands of deaths in her wars of terror, in pursuit of alluring power.
A fearsome sight to behold as she was leading her generals, riding on a black thoroughbred stallion, into battle, with her long blonde hair streaming behind her!
One mysterious day, she cut off her long blond hair, then wrapped the tresses in the blood-red robes, after placing the package on the throne of swords, she rode off into the night.
Her disappearance took the world by surprise. After a cryptic announcement, delivered on the last day, she ever sat on the throne of swords.

“Power once attained is too dangerous to retain.”

THE FACE OF HIDDEN FEELING

by John Yeo

I am the one who knows the real me, deep inside I am angry and unhappy.
My eyes are blind, but my soul can see, the futility and prejudice in this unhappy world. My hands have been painted with wide open eyes to give the illusion of sight. When I remove my hands to touch and feel, my eyes will always be unable to see, the pain and sorrow in this unhappy world.
The eyes in my soul will never shed tears, in sympathy or sadness. I have had the artist describe my looks, to reflect a face I will never see, in any mirror that will work for me.

And yet….

I am the one who knows the real me, deep inside I am happy and carefree.
My eyes are blind but my soul can see, the hope for the future of this wonderful world. My hands have been painted to create a disguise and present an illusion of sight. When my hands are removed the painted eyes will never reflect a smile, to mirror the happiness and hope I feel, in this magical mysterious world. The eyes in my soul will forever light up with the joy and happiness I feel. I have had the artist describe my looks, to reflect a face I will never see, in any mirror that will work for me.

Which of my faces is hiding from you, behind my painted hands.

That, I will never, ever, allow you to see!

BOOK DROWNING

by John Yeo

The sad thing was he never planned what happened. I mean literally, he was drowning his sorrows, after receiving the latest rejection letter from another unenlightened, uneducated, unrealistic, uninformed publisher.
“Another Gin and Tonic. Please bartender.”
  “Yes Sir, ice and lemon?”
“Yes thanks, heavy on the gin, light on the ice and just a dash of tonic. I need to make the bottle of tonic last all night.”
  “OK! Sir!”
“Bartender, have you ever felt so shitty, that even dogs would turn their noses up at you?”
  “Beg your pardon, Sir?”
“I have spent days, weeks, then months, working on a personal masterpiece of creative writing, only to be told that it is not quite right for publication, by several different ignoramuses! What do you think about that?”
The bartender shrugged animatedly as he went on,
“No-one seems to care about the hard work and the pure dedicated effort that is required to put a piece of writing together. Another gin please! No make it a double. Just a splash of tonic from my tonic bottle please, and a tinkle of ice.”
  “OK, Sir.”
There was a huge tropical fish tank, covering a whole wall of this downtown bar, leading to a small pond on the terrace, people would sit staring at the tropical fish for hours just to relax, while taking a drink. He had never noticed this before and thought to himself, this must be where the expression, drinking like a fish comes from.
       “Bartender!”
  “Yes Sir!”
“Charge my glass again with the same please! Do you ever have dreams that get smashed to pieces, then the rude awakening to a harsh reality. I think I may just have to rewrite the whole damn thing from the beginning again!”
“Are you sure you will be OK! Sir.”
“Of course! Thanks, I’m fine, pour me another, I’m stepping outside on the terrace to get some air.”
Then he unsteadily walked outside to a table and began to curse.
The bartender then heard a splash as a large paper envelope was unceremoniously dumped into the water.
The man then turned and left the bar.

THE SCHOOL TRIP

by John Yeo

“I tell you she’s dead, Cindy. Look she’s not moving, that’s
always a sure sign someone is dead.”
“Don’t be silly Georgie, my Mum says dead people don’t wear clothes like that, dead people only wear ghost costumes.”
“Even ghosts can change clothes Cindy, the teacher told me, some haunted houses have headless men, in olden-day clothes, haunting at night. How do we know if she’s dead or not? Maybe she’s a ghost who forgot to go home this morning.”
” Georgie. I’m scared, if she’s dead, we should tell someone. Maybe she’s been murdered. maybe we will get murdered if we tell. I want to get out of here!”
“I’m scared too Cindy, Shall we go and find the man in the next room sitting in the chair watching all the visitors? Or shall we catch up with the teacher and the rest of the class?”

“Hello children!” Came a ghostly voice from the very still lady, who seemed to wake up. “Are you being good?”
Cindy and Georgie screamed and ran away fast.

LAST MEAL

by John Yeo

“I would like to order please Waiter!”

“Yes Sir! What can I get you?”

“Hand me the menu please, Waiter! No! Not the regular menu, I want the special menu please.”

“The special menu, Sir? Are you sure? Have you thought the whole thing through, and received the guidance that is often required before we serve a meal from the special menu!”

“Waiter! Please don’t question my request. You are here to do a job, not to ask impertinent questions. Hand me the special menu. Please.”

“Sorry Sir, I usually get a warning when someone is here to order from our special menu. I suppose management have overlooked that on this occasion.”

“Waiter! I am not concerned with the subtle nuances of the behind-the-scenes management of your establishment. Hand me the special menu and I will place my order!”

“Sorry Sir! It is essential that we receive payment in advance of the special meal, due to the circumstances and the difficulty involved in collecting payment. Shall I call the Manager, Sir?”

“Look here Waiter! Are you insinuating that I am unable to pay the bill, I have never heard of money-up-front in a restaurant before. There is more than enough cash in this envelope here! Take it! I don’t need your Manager, I need food man! I need food quickly to speed the cessation of my hunger pains, with a quick release, by the gestation of the required special meal.”

“Yes Sir! Here is the special menu. What can I get for you?”

“Well Waiter, for an appetiser, I would like raw shredded Scorpions tails with a dash of sauce to ease the passage through the digestive system.
Then for a starter I would like raw Rattlesnake fangs, served on a bed of salad garnished with very hot chilli peppers.
Next a dish of fiery Tarantula soup with the fly-filled web containing an essence of deadly nightshade.
Now, should it be required, for the very important main course. I would like. A lightly seasoned, raw whole Pufferfish served with fried toadstools and the stinging glands of a Portuguese man-of-war Jellyfish.”

“Yes Sir! Would you like your meal to be served in the Chapel-Of-Rest, or on the terrace at the portals of Hells Kitchen?”

“Waiter! I don’t have any preference whatsoever. A private room will be fine. Call the wine-waiter please!”

“Yes Sir!”

FLYING JEWELS

by John Yeo

Two climbers were making their way along rugged, rocky slopes. The hills and valleys spread before them from little used trails, leading upwards, always upwards.
They turned into a large natural plateau covered by green succulent plants, containing a hidden valley, with a stream of pure clear water running through the rocky terrain.

“We will, pitch camp here for the night and rest up.” said Lloyd.

“Great!” Replied his best friend, Hamilton nodding in agreement.

They had been climbing for about three hours now and he was ready for a rest.
Chasing the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, the two friends were on holiday together searching for the rare flying jewels of Nepal.
After a few beers around the campfire and a meal from various tins they were soon asleep.
The next morning they knew they had reached their goal
Everywhere, as far as the eye could see the incredible Cactus plants had burst into a fantastic sea of succulent beauty, heavily scented floral splendour. They were covered in beautiful butterflies sipping nectar from these glorious blooms. The flying jewels had arrived.

A prompt response for “INSPIRATION MONDAY:” ~ BABY’S FIRST PAYCHECK

BABY’S FIRST PAYCHECK

by John Yeo

Miriam gracefully swept into the world, to a fanfare of fantastic, futuristic, flashbulb popping, publicity, at the end of the twenty-first century.  When I say swept, this is a deliberate reference to the advanced state of healthcare and attention she had received, during her long sojourn, within her Mother’s womb.

A celebrity before she was born, Miriam was a miracle child. The daughter of two successful superstars, of worldwide fame and notoriety, who had given up on the idea of children, Miriam would never lack for anything. During a happy contented childhood, spent mainly enjoying professional, hired, loving care and attention, with private tutors to provide her education, Miriam grew into a beautiful woman, with a unique personality.

When she entered University, everything was done behind the scenes, to smooth her way, and ensure her safe progress.
An inspired, well educated, self-assured young woman emerged, and announced to her stunned parents.
“I am going to Africa, to help to relieve the people suffering from the curse of Ebola, by working as an auxiliary nurse. I have accepted a job with a private red-cross organisation.”

There was uproar in the family, her Father was angry and refused to speak to her, then left to languish, liquidly, in his gentleman’s club, in town. Her Mother, in tears, called for her Psychologist, to transfer her despair, instantly on the consulting couch.

Miriam flew to Africa to begin working as an auxiliary nurse.

One month later a letter arrived addressed to Miriam’s parents. Father opened the envelope to reveal a cheque made out in the name of his daughter, for the princely sum of £100.00.

His chest heaved, as he suppressed a tear, and with a smile of proud admiration, he read these few words, that were written on the reverse of the cheque, out loud to his wife.

“Here is my very first Paycheck. I am, and I always will be your loving daughter. Miriam”
