Daily Nature Log. 31st August 2026

The evening sky

Daily Nature Log ✍️
A late afternoon start today, with a crisp 14 mph westerly wind making 19°C feel more like 25°C. Solitary wood pigeons kept watch from rooftops and chimney pots along the route, while a pair of large gulls and a solitary corvid combed the recreation ground. Sharp afternoon showers had brought plenty of surface food, leaving the air smelling wonderfully fresh.
In the cemetery, bright hawthorn and scarlet rowan berries caught the lowering sun. Reaching the upper field, I paused to photograph dramatic clouds rolling over the fertile fields stretching beyond, interrupting only as a sparrow darted into the hedgerow cover. Near the exit, another wood pigeon posed perfectly on a ledge framed by a laden rowan tree.

Turning onto Cemetery Drive, the wind rustled through the holm oaks and sycamores with a rhythmic hiss—just like the sea breaking on a shingle beach. Blackberries, hips, haws, and elderberries lined the return path, with a pair of wheeling gulls above the leisure centre guiding me home.
