Daily Nature Log. 1st November 2026

Close up of rooks

Step into the North wind at 3:30 pm and Sheringham feels a nippy 10°C, despite the air temp reading 12°C. With a brisk 11 mph breeze blowing straight off the coast, dusk is settling in fast.
Private gardens along the way are glowing with plump red holly berries, scattering a couple of feeding wood pigeons as I pass. Over the recreation ground, a solitary gull glides effortlessly across the high sky on outstretched wings.

Into the cemetery, pathways are busy with birdlife: a single sparrow dives into the hedge for cover, a blackbird flees with an alarmed cry, and further along, another pair of blackbirds and two wood pigeons burst away from a feast on a couple of rowan trees. At the top field, at least 30 rooks hold court on the telegraph wires 50 yards off—a perfect test for the new Pixel’s zoom lens, and the shots come out sharp.

Heading down the main road towards the leisure centre, two noisy crows circle the tall pines on the golf course hill. On the leisure centre roof itself, 27 feral pigeons stand in a precise line while five more circle overhead. Another quick spin with the mobile phone zoom delivers splendid results, all under the watchful gaze of the usual sentinel gull perched on a nearby roof.
