Daily Nature Log. 28th August 2026

Gulls feeding on the sand

Daily Nature Log ✍️
The sea air was crisp at 19°C as Margaret dropped me off by the golf club gates. Setting out around the course perimeter, I immediately met a striking German Shepherd, while jackdaws and gulls claimed the greens. A muzzled standard Poodle trotted past, and brambles heavy with blackberries tangled dramatically with wild weeds along the path.

Heading toward the clifftop, a leafy thicket came alive with a fluttering commotion of 20 sparrows. Moments later, a black Labrador and a doleful, apprehensive-looking Boxer ambled by. Bright tree mallows lined the path coming into bloom, surrounded by dancing cabbage white butterflies.

I circled back toward the promenade, passing a Spaniel and Pug pairing, then paused to photograph gulls foraging on the sands below and a vibrant Tamarisk shrub in full flower.

Heading back across the golf course, the wild activity only intensified—a sunlit hedge of ivy blossom buzzed with a rich variety of bees and butterflies, while four feral pigeons watched over the scene from the leisure centre roof.

Down on the recreation ground, recent rain had brought grubs to the surface, sparking a feeding frenzy for over 40 corvids, a gull, and two wood  pigeons.
