A biting 20 mph easterly wind made today’s 11°C air feel more like a chilly 8°C as I set off. Over the recreation ground, ten corvids were tossed about in wild wind currents, while a tiny sparrow darted for shelter in the nearby brambles. Inside the cemetery, two blackbirds flitted through the hedgerows separately.
Overhead at the rookery, up to 50 rooks wheeled in the sky. I paused to listen to their guttural, rasping calls, wondering if AI will one day help us decipher their language and converse with them.
Passing the five-a-side pitch, a group of elderly men were enjoying a game of walking football, while a solitary crow pecked beneath the pine trees. Reaching the leisure centre, two corvids flew in from the golf course, ten feral pigeons lined the roof, and a single gull held its usual perch atop a nearby house. Lower down, semi-protected from the gusty chill, two wood pigeons lay resting in the long grass.
