A Dreamy Chain. 25th October 2026

The clocks went back one hour today and as usual we made the most of an extra hour.

I had a strange, unusual type of waking dream today.

“As I left my house, I met a late middle-aged Black man. He had a well-lived-in face, quite wrinkled, and he was going gray. He was casually but neatly dressed, and he thrust a book—or it might have been a pamphlet—into my hands. I seemed to have some idea of what this was about, and I asked him where I would see him again to return it. He just walked away after this, and I began to read the paper item he had thrust into my hands.”

Then the dream ended as I woke up.

I picked up my mobile phone and began to check my emails.

I had an email from ‘The Marginalian’, a literary magazine. This edition featured the 20 favourite books of the last 20 years of ‘The Marginalian’.

I checked out book number one, and it turned out to be a book written by Walt Whitman, entitled Leaves of Grass.

I followed a link that was added, which led to an essay on why the book had been included.

Walt Whitman was an American poet who was against slavery and published several brilliant anti-slavery poems in Leaves of Grass.

Which brought me back to the strange waking dream I experienced this morning, involving a Black man who conveyed a message to me.
