Daily Nature Log ✍️
Sunlight bathed Felbrigg at 2:00 pm, though a brisk wind made 20°C feel like 19°C—fleeces were essential! Margaret and I ambled half a mile across a field, treading carefully past scattered sheep droppings while a dozen wood pigeons scattered at our approach. Beneath ancient sweet chestnuts, corvids swooped overhead and quenched their thirst at a galvanised water trough, while courteous dog walkers strolled past.

Leaving Margaret comfortably settled at the Squire’s Pantry with tea and a cheese scone, I set off on a solo loop. I snapped a few resting hounds beneath the café tables before venturing into the West Garden. Past majestic cedars and rhododendrons, the borders lay nearly bare, save for a few stubborn white nicotiana blooms.

My path wound through a grand stand of sycamore, beech, and chestnut trees towering over the hawthorn undergrowth, opening out to a five-bar gate. Across the field, with sheep in the distance and jackdaws circling above, I met a lady with a gigantic black Newfoundland. Without warning, the soft giant flopped onto its back for a joyful roll in the grass—its owner blamed youth, though I quietly suspected fleas!

I looped around the woods surrounding the parched pond, flushing out a few more pigeons, before snapping a quick photograph of Felbrigg Hall on my return to the Pantry.
